CHAPTER HISTORY @ UVA

In the year of 1973, there was a brother on grounds by the name of Brother Linwood Jacobs [Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter], who was serving as an Associate Professor of Education and Associate Dean of Students responsible for facilitating the establishment of chapters of the Pan Hellenic Council members at the University. He began his search for noble men to join this Fraternity in the Fall of 1973. With the assistance of Brother Clarence F. Nelson, Jr. [Polemarch, Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter], Brother Jacobs was able to prepare all of the administrative documents that were to be submitted to the Province Polemarch in hopes of establishing a chapter at the University of Virginia. The Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter initiated the charter members in April 1974 at the Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.

The eight charter members are as follows:William Anderson, Dennis Blackwell , Jerome Brown,  Robert Davidson, Harrison Davis, Kent Merritt, Robert Milner, and  Alex Strawn.

These brothers DEFINED achievement. In 1970, the University of Virginia integrated their football team in signing four African-American players, two of them being Eta Sigma charter members!Although the charter members came into the bond in April, the chapter did not receive designation as the University of Virginia Chapter, the Eta Sigma of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. until December 7, 1974.

CHAPTER SERVICE PROJECT

The Eta Sigma Chapter serves in two longstanding Kappa Alpha Psi Programs, which are Kappa League and Guide Right. With the Kappa League program, brothers volunteer weekly at Albermarle High School. Their goal is to mentor and tutor African American Males, specifically in 9th and 10th grade, to prepare for college, or whatever future endeavors the may want to pursue. The Guide Right program is a program where brothers are weekly volunteers at Jackson-Via Elementary School. Our goal is to improve the students’ and teachers’ well-being through mentorship of the students. Forums Each year, the brothers of Eta Sigma have various informational forums, which have included events in the past such as, “Insanity With the Nupes” and a “Hazing Prevention Workshop.” These events are not only intended to inform students about general necessary life skills, but to also provide an engaging experience for all students to learn and apply their new skills.

INTAKE

Eta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,Inc. MOIP (Membership Orientation Intake Process)

The Fraternity has developed an admissions process known as Membership Orientation and Intake Program which establishes an orderly and rational process of applicant solicitation, screening, and initiation; and the membership intake process is calculated to attract and retain members of high academic, moral, social, civic, ethical and religious standards; and The Fraternity seeks to remove any and all opportunities for pledging, hazing, antisocial and unlawful activity and seeks to promote in every phase of fraternity life only safe and wholesome activities which are consistent with the Code of Conduct of the colleges, universities and jurisdictions where our chapters are chartered. The effective enforcement of membership intake policies and the anti-hazing edict requires that the college, university, and community officials join the Fraternity in informing all members of the community that hazing, horseplay, physical stunts, antisocial, or unlawful activity of any kind are not and cannot be a precondition of membership in the Fraternity.
