CHAPTER HISTORY @ UVA
In the Fall of 1973, the Gamma Alpha Lambda graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in Charlottesville endeavored to spread the ideals of Alpha to the University of Virginia. Brother Steven Decatur Waters organized an interest group of nine African-American men at the University. These men became known as the "Prime Nine." These men were Iota Beta's charter line, who crossed the Burning Sands of Alpha on March 8, 1974 at the Virginia Association of Chapters of AlphaPhi Alpha Fraternity (VACAPAF). Two days later, on March 10, the Iota Beta chapter became the 399th incorporation into the General Convention. A total of 207 men have crossed the Burning Sands of the Iota Beta Chapter since then.
CHAPTER SERVICE PROJECT
Clark Elementary School (Go-to-High School, Go-to-College)
Every Friday afternoon, the men of Iota Beta travel to Clark Elementary School – a local school in Charlottesville – and serve as “Big Brothers” to a group of intelligent fourth graders. The kids are taught various lessons and morals in fields of life such as respect, academics, conflict resolution, and chivalry. These students also learn minor stepping techniques and they are taken on field trips to reward them for their hard work in the classroom.
Voter Registration
The Iota Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will be in the community and around grounds to hold voter registration for the 2012 elections. "A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People.
Alpha Week
Each year, the Iota Beta chapter celebrates the founding and principles of our dear fraternity with service, events, and activities.
Forums
All throughout each school year, the Iota Beta chapter hosts numerous forums on various issues that people encounter and topics that affect students. In the past and in present day, a few topics include chivalry, hazing, sexual awareness/health, local issues on Grounds, and more. The forums have positive impacts on those who attend, and the chapter sometimes co-sponsors forums with other organizations to develop bonds
Iota Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha IMDP INTAKE process
Alpha Phi Alpha's official and only nationally sanctioned intake process is called Initial Membership Development Process, or IMDP. Under IMDP, candidates will take a pre-rest which they are required to score a 90% of above to gain access to an application. If a candidate does not score 90% or above on the pre-test then the candidate may not pursue membership for an entire year. Once the pre-test has been passed candidates will then be given the official application which is extensive and requires several university documents, transcript, identifications, sponsorship and recommendation letters, and parents signature (if applicant is under 21), among other documents as well. The IMDP process is 3 weekends long and at the end of each weekend, candidates will be administered an exam. IN order to proceed to the next weekend, candidates must score 90% above on each examination to continue. Failure to do so will result in the termination of the candidate's pursuit.
