CHAPTER HISTORY @ UVA

The Theta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the grounds of the University of Virginia by eighteen women on February 9, 1974. In a time when not many African American women were present on grounds these eighteen women sought to bring AKA's great legacy of sisterhood, service, intelligence and elegance to Jefferson's historic academy. These magnificent women include Wanda Allen, Betty Evans Anderson, Brenda Hammond Locker, Carolyn Hilton, Carrie Johnston, Gloria Casey, Jaqueline Mason Curtis, Wilhelmina McDaniel, Phyllis Moore James, Pamela Moseley, Mary Moyer Kearney, Janet Pearson Roberts, Julia Reeves, Regina Ross Vessels, Audrey Spencer Horseley, Toni Taylor, Hope Walton and Debra White Coleman.Since 1974, over 350 women have joined the ranks of the Theta Kappa Chapter at the University of Virginia all of whom have been women of high merit standing, supreme distinction, outstanding leadership, and dedicated to a lifetime of service.

CHAPTER SERVICE PROJECT

Along with participating in sisterly activities the women of the Theta Kappa Chapter are committed to putting on quality programs and community service opportunities on the grounds of the University of Virginia and Charlottesville community. For example in the more recent past, the chapter has worked on various community projects with the local Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, American Red Cross, Carter Community Center, shoe drive, Kluge Rehabilitation Center, Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, and University of Virginia Recycling. We have also participated in the MS and Alzheimer Walks, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and tutoring at local schools. Additionally, we have hosted a variety of forums on such topics as: diversity, resume writing, unity among African American women, black leadership, AKAdeme, domestic violence, Business etiquette, Greeks Learning to Avoid Debt, earth day and the history of African Americans in America. This active involvement in the University and Charlottesville communities has earned the chapter numerous awards and recognition from the Inter-Sorority council, the Council of Black Student Leaders and Alpha Kappa Alpha. These include ISC Outstanding Service Award, ISC Member of the Year Award, CBSL Outstanding Organization Award, AKA President of the year and many others. Furthermore, we have received an award for best programming in the 2008-2009 academic year. Thus the Theta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has a rich history and looks forward to expanding upon their success in the future as Theta Kappa continues to work in the communities of Charlottesville to promote the ideals of academic success, sisterhood, and service.
